This is a wonderful combination of some simple chemistry experiments that allow students (such as myself) to gain insight into the experimental world of inorganic chemistry. The laboratory experiments are real, interesting, and also allow the student to think about what is happening, and to apply their knowledge to taking the experiments to a further level. This is an excellent book, and probably the best source available for inorganic experiments for undergrads.

If you own a boat then you understand that B.O.A.T is an acronym for Bring Out Another Thousand (dollars). Anyone who owns a boat, unless that boat is new, and has not yet been used will be forced to deal to boat maintainence issues. This book will help you to do some if this maintainence yourself so you don't have to spend a fortune to keep your boat running.

If you have a powerboat, a rowboat, or a sailboat then I recommend this book. This also makes a great gift for any boat owner.

One thing that I really like about this book is that there are lots of pictures and diagrams to help you understand what they are talking about. When you are doing work on a boat, sometimes one picture can be worth a thousand words.

It is obvious that the people writing this book really know what they are doing. This was not written by amatuers.

So if you have major repairs to deal with, or you just want to understand how your boat was built, this is the book for you.

Well written and beautifuly illustrated with breathtaking photographs, Captain Pike's thesis on motorboating teaches and entertains through every page.

Enlightening and education and uproariously funny at times, the writing is understandable for master yachsment and landlubbers alike and there are enough pictures to delight even the youngest readers.

You will learn the basics of boating. What makes them float to the more technical aspect of cruising. This book also makes a good reference guid or teaching resource for boating safety skills.

With sections on how to price and buy a boat, where to buy and when, how they and their systems work and explanations of many of the sometimes mysterious terms of the sea, this book will educate and amuse.

Captain Pike brings decades of seafaring to the reader in a narrative that elicit smiles and laughs along the way. A consummate skipper and wonderful storyteller, he keeps the reader interested with personal anecdotes and easy to understand explanations. Before you even consider buyng a boat, give this book a close read. Whether you intend to boat on the open seas or inland waters a few feet deep, you will be very glad you did.

I found this book by accident in the university library.... I plan to buy it! Comprehensive source of ideas for teaching reading and writing for elementary grades.

Written by a true gentleman! Tom and his wife were kind enough to dig through their home some years ago to round up some new copies of this book as well as "Walley Fishing Today" for our fishing club. Tom even took time to write dedications into the cover of each of the several books. "Northern Pike" has proven to be the baseline book used by a group of forty men traveling to an upstate New York lake each spring to hunt pike. Since obtaining this title, we (those having the book) have at least doubled our pike catch. We have, over the last 6 years, gotten so good at catching pike utilizing this data that we routinely return 90% of our pike to the water because we are certain to catch plenty more.

Nearly all of the data in the book has proven generic enough for me to use when fishing any of the lakes I frequent across 5 states. I never have a problem finding pike.

I have relied heavily upon this book and shall, as soon as I replace the copy stolen from me, rely on it once more. (no one wants to loan me their copy).

I heartily recommend this book for any fisherman whether novice or veteran.

This is simply a must-have book for the international military-political history fan. I thought I pretty much knew most of the political intrigue aspects of WW 2, but Osborn's revelations about the machinations involving Britain, France, Finland, Scandinavia, Turkey, Germany and the USSR are fascinating and will surprise many of my ilk.
The options for initiating hostilities with the Soviets that the British and particularly the French entertained had grave implications for the war and the subsequent history of the world. What if the "Allies" had gone to war with the Russians in 1939 in defence of the Finns? The dynamics of this scenario are potentially endless.
The belief that Russia was as grave a threat, if not more so, than Hitler's Germany, comes across very strongly in Osborn's "instant classic" work. Stalin's treacherous attacks on Poland, the Baltic states and Finland ranked him next to Hitler in the eyes of the world, and the fact that the USSR was supplying the Nazis with embargo-busting material shipments made the prospects of killing dozens of birds with one stone too tempting for many in the UK. Attacking Stalin's lair in Finland, the Crimea and the Caucausus were tempting goals for many who preferred fighting in someone elses' backyard instead of their own Sitzkrieg "front." The hypocrisy of the Allies in deferring conflict with the Germans in favor of the weaker Soviets did not go unnoticed but was overwhelmed by the fear of another WW 1 holocaust and the need to bolster morale by doing something.
The drawback of this title is its price, like many of the Greenwood titles. But it needs to be in your library.

The controversial figure of Bishop Pike is fading is the past but this book reads like a novel. Whatever view one takes of the fascinating events following his son`s suicide, they are told with a very moving openness. Arthur Ford and other mediums gave spectacular readings to Pike following the poltergeists episodes. Truly interesting and food for thought.

It goes without saying that the year 2001 will not be remembered as one of the best years on record for whitewater boating in Northern California. In fact, according to Bill Center at Camp Lotus, 2001 is the lowest water year since 1977. Other authorities on the subject seem to generally agree. Yet in the midst of all of this yawning and rock scraping, another new guidebook to paddling in this great state has arrived with very little fanfare. The new guidebook is titled Paddling Northern California, and it was written by long-time paddler, Charlie Pike. Charlie's new guidebook uses a fresh new approach to paddling and combines knowledge from several different disciplines of paddling, including sea kayaking, and describes paddling on both flatwater lakes and whitewater rivers, in both canoes and kayaks. The book was also written with an audience of novice and intermediate paddlers in mind. There is probably no better guidebook for the beginning paddler in Northern California. And while Charlie's new guidebook is not the most comprehensive book on the subject of whitewater runs in Northern California, it is quite informative, has a well-organized layout, and is extremely easy to read. In short, it is a joy to read and use this book as a reference. In fact, one of the most outstanding qualities of his book is the use of combined paddling disciplines. In his new guidebook, Charlie takes the reader on a paddling tour of Northern California, and shows you the joys of each discipline. I personally consider myself to be an advanced paddler in my own realm, but it seems that the more you know, the more there is to learn. While reading this book, I found myself getting really excited at the prospect of doing some other forms of paddling that I had never tried before, like paddling with the tides up and down coastal esteros and sloughs, sea kayaking across the bays, and canoeing across those beautiful and serene natural lakes in the High Sierra. In this book, I also found great information on some of those obscure paddling trips that I've never had the chance to take, like the continuous Class II nature of the Bear River near Colfax, the remote and stunningly beautiful Juniper Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park, those elusive runs on the Truckee River, the beautiful Albion River along the Pacific Coast, and paddling the Cosumnes River Preserve in Central Valley, where one can enjoy world-class bird-watching. Charlie's Northern California paddling tour begins in the Monterey Bay, sea kayaking amongst the marine mammals, while enjoying those great views of Cannery Row. And his paddling tour ends at the take-out of the East Fork Carson near Minden, Nevada. And the middle is filled with only the finest paddling runs in the state mentioned between Monterey and Minden. There are 65 wonderful paddle trips documented in all. Like I mentioned earlier, this is by no means a comprehensive guidebook to all of the rivers in Northern California - quite the contrary. For instance, I found it interesting that Charlie would document the Class IV Chamberlain Falls Run on the North Fork American, while never even mentioning any of the Class II or Class III runs in the over 100 miles of the Lower Klamath, which are much more within the abilities of novice and intermediate level paddlers. However, sometimes quality is better than quantity, and this is one of those times. Charlie only documents those paddle trips that are the very best in terms of quality of experiences. His book is a treasure trove of the best experiences to be had through paddling, and the information and the maps are presented in clear and concise terms, making it a joy to use this book. For instance, for certain rivers with which I am intimately familiar, I compared Charlie's information against my own knowledge and found that Charlie's information was not only completely correct, but it was also better explained than I could have explained it myself. Besides the obligatory International Scale of River Difficulty, with which we are all so familiar, Charlie explains the Sea Conditions Rating System (or SCRS), of which I must admit that I was totally unaware. I also appreciate his treatment of the subjects of environmental protection, low-impact camping, and water safety. One of the best parts of this book is the four Appendices, which explain how to get accurate information from a variety of sources, including the Internet. This information includes such specifics as dam release and river flow gauges, tide tables (something I know very little about), and other nice-to-know items, such as weather forecasts, wind velocities, and wave heights. He also has the addresses and telephone numbers for almost all of the managing agencies of the government, as well as popular commercial outfitters and local paddling clubs. Regardless of your specific paddling interests and skill level, Charlie Pike's book is a necessity for the bookshelf of every person who paddles in Northern California.

Douglas Pike performed a valuable service to history by capturing the essence of the North Vietnamese strategy for victory in the Vietnam War. His explanation of the various techniques used to win not only victory on the battlefield, but, more importantly, strategic and political victories over both the American and South Vietnamese opponents, should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in how the United States lost this war. Well written and researched, this book is both enjoyable and disturbing.

Stephen Brown did such an excellent job of capturing the Nu-Pike in Long Beach in the days just before it closed, in this photographic journey.

Images in color and black and white, bring back memories that had been lost to time. It was a pleasure to have them brought out of the cobwebs. Of course I'm am slightly biased as my mother met my father for the first time at the Pike! And I personally remember when I was at the Pike for the last time in 1978 and realized this was definately the end of an era. :(

I highly recommend this book if you are into the history of the Long Beach Nu-Pike in California. It is very unfortunate it is out of print. It is most definately worth finding, even used. I know of no other offering like it.
